Note that the star party described below is for a normal year.  The pandemic caused the 2020 event to be canceled.  For 2021,only full-event registrants may participate, organized children's activities will not take place, and CDC-recommended COVID-19 precautions will be followed.  Click on the IFSP Website button below for more specifics about the 2021 event.

The Indiana Family Star Party is an annual regional event that WVAS co-sponsors with the Indiana Astronomical Society and the Muncie Astronomy Club.  It is the only star party in the nation specifically aimed at introducing families and children to the hobby of astronomy, but also welcomes amateur astronomers of all ages to enjoy the dark skies at Prairie Grass Observatory.  The week-nights portion of the event is aimed at amateurs interested in photography and other forms of serious observing, while the weekend nights are targeted toward families, children, and the general public.

Activities include our Sky Trekker Observers’ program for kids and novice adults, speakers who present on various astronomical topics, a raffle, solar observing, nighttime observing, camping, and a nature walk.  Amenities include on-site showers and restrooms, an air-conditioned Nature Center, on-site catered food, and hay-wagon and/or golf-cart transport about the grounds for those unable to walk large distances or those who simply enjoy the wagon ride.
